Landmark Collection » Clapper Bridge

Panorama photography landscape picture of clapper bridge, Devon. The panorama is taken from the edge of the river Dart showing the clapper bridge in the foreground with the 'new' main road bridge behind. This 'new' bridge was built in the 1780's. In and around the river are a few scattered boulders and lining the riverbank are reeds and grasses. The deciduous trees in the distance are bare and on the right hand side, partially obscured by conifer trees, is a Devon farmhouse.
Detail of the old Devon farm house.

This is one of the finest examples of a Clapper Bridge straddling, as it does, the East Dart River at Postbridge in Devon. The bridge was constructed in the 13/14 century from four large granite slabs, the largest weighing over 8 tonnes, supported by three granite piers.

This image was taken in the early spring while the trees were still bare. A storm was brewing ready to chase away the sunshine.
