Landmark Collection » Seven Sisters

Panorama photography landscape picture of Seven Sisters, Sussex Downland. This photograph was taken from the sea, showing boulders and seaweed in the foreground leading to a ridge of hard chalk and then the rocky beach stretching to the cliff face of the Seven Sisters. The chalk of the cliffs is white with grey layers of flints forming clearly visible lines in this picture. There is a clear blue sky with one small white cloud.
Detail of the flint layers in the chalk cliff.

The Seven Sisters on the Sussex Downs were formed by glacier melt water at the end of the last Ice Age. This melt water carved steep sided valleys that have been truncated by sea erosion to form the cliffs we see here today. These seven undulating cliffs are continuously changing as they are constantly beaten by the sea and weather.

The detail in this image is stunning, from the sea weed on the rocks through the chalk line to the sands and onto the cliffs beyond where the layers in the chalk are clearly visible.
