Landmark Collection » Spitsbergen

Picture of Longyearbyen, Spitsbergen, Svalbard archipelago. This photograph shows a line of steeply gabled houses painted in turquoise, cream, dusty orange, cream, pink, and orange in a row. At the end of the row of houses in the distance is a mountain dark and smooth against a clear blue sky.

Spitsbergen is the main island of the Svalbard archipelago and just 1300km from the North Pole.

This is the Norwegian settlement of Longyearbyen which was founded in 1906 after an American mine owner John M. Longyear began mining coal from a prehistoric tropical forest.

Today the permafrost is 500m deep and winter temperatures can drop to -45 deg C.
